13/4: The Blessings of the New Covenant

Jeremiah 31:31-37

“The principal design of the prophet here is evidently to express the difference between the law and the gospel: the law shows man his duty, the gospel brings the grace of regeneration, by which the heart of man is changed, and he is enabled to do his duty. All who, during the time of the Mosaic dispensation, attained salvation, were saved by virtue of this new covenant; but this was not then evidently exhibited; neither was the renewing grace of God so generally and largely given as it has been under the gospel.” – Benson Commentary

Was meditating on Jer 31:33-34 cause that always speaks to me regarding how people’s lives are transformed. It is not a list of what to do and what not to do but the change of heart that produces a lasting and continuous change. The law tells us what to do but is powerless to help us fulfill it. Only with a relationship with God that our lives can be changed from the inside out. It is of course possible to sin and fall away even if we have a relationship at the start (i.e like Solomon). However, it is only a relationship with God and a continuous one that will allow our lives to be transformed constantly under His grace and love.

God’s covenant to us today is that He will put the law in our minds and write it on our hearts. He will be our God and we will be His people. God will forgive us and remember our sins no more. As long as we stay close to Him, He will enable us to follow His ways and His decrees.

I am experiencing the Holy Spirit that put God’s laws in my mind and my heart. Everyday I need to allow room for the Holy Spirit to work in my life and not just go through the motion. I need to thank God for not remembering my sins and will not accuse me once I confess my sins before Him.
