12/5: Decision for Purity

1 Kings 14:21-31

Reflection:
I went to read up in 2 Chronicles 12:1-16 and understood more of Rehoboam. In v1 of 2 Chr 12, Rehoboam abandoned the law of the Lord because he had become strong. And God sent Shishak king of Egypt (with 12,000 chariots and 60,000 hoursemen and allied forces of Libyans, Sukkites and Cushites) to attack Judah. From here we see that the Lord used Shemaiah the prophet to speak to Rehoboam and the leaders to tell them God has abandoned them because they have abandoned Him. The turning point was in v6 of 2 Chr 12, “The leaders of Judah and the king humbled themselves and said, ‘The Lord is just.'” God then had mercy on them and said that He will not destroy them but be subjects to Shishak so that they learn the difference between serving Him and other kings. And I belive the reason why Rehoboam was able to establish himself as king for 17 years is because of the that turning point.

God is indeed patient and merciful. With Judah worshipping idols and builting Asherah poles and having shrine prostitutes, God still sent prophet Shemaiah to warn them and ask them to repent. And when they did, God was quick to withdraw the total destruction of Rehoboam and allowed him to rule for 17 years as king of Judah.

Prayer:
Thank you for being a patient and merciful God. There are times in my life in which I feel I am more successful and become less dependent on You, but You have been always good to me and continued to lead me and guide me. Pray that I will always have a heart that is humble so that I can be open to listen to You for your rebukes and direction.
